约翰·阿赫瓦里，当时他跑的是马拉松
说起1968年的墨西哥奥运会的马拉松比赛，有一位最后到达终点的选手，一直存在于人们的记忆里，他的行为不仅被誉为“当代奥林匹克历史上最伟大的时刻”，记录他的那些镜头，更是反复出现在人们的眼前，用来诠释奥林匹克精神。
这位运动员叫约翰·阿赫瓦里，来自非洲的坦桑尼亚。夜幕已经降临，漫长的道路上，只有阿赫瓦里一个人孤独的身影，他一瘸一拐地跑着，简单包扎过的绷带上还在不停地渗出血水，他的腿受伤了。此时，距离比赛开始已经4个多小时了，距离马拉松比赛的冠军冲过终点赢取金牌，也已经过去一个多小时了。
这是一场有44个国家超过70名运动员参加的奥运会马拉松比赛，阿赫瓦里是其中的一员。
1968年，坦桑尼亚刚刚独立并成立联合共和国不久，这是他们第一次以坦桑尼亚的名义参加奥运会。所以，这次来墨西哥参加奥运会的3名队员，每个人都为自己能够代表国家参加奥运会感到骄傲。
在马拉松比赛之前，阿赫瓦里的两名队友———一位参加的是拳击比赛，一位参加的是400米跑———都已经完成了赛事，也都没有取得出色的成绩。而阿赫瓦里就不同了，他是坦桑尼亚这次奥运会的一个希望，一个被认为可以为他们的国家赢得奖牌的优秀选手。
当体育场里的观众已经走得差不多的时候，一阵由远而近的警报器声引起了还留在体育场内的人们的注意，这些人绝大部分都是留在场里做着赛后的收尾工作的工作人员和裁判员。很久以前，大家就以为所有运动员都已经完成了比赛，所以，就连通向体育场内环形跑道的大门都已经关起来了。
这时候，墨西哥城已经是晚上7点多钟了。体育场入口处的大门缓缓地打开，阿赫瓦里跌跌撞撞地跑进了———不如说是走进了———体育场。在场的人都被他惊呆了！
近乎蹒跚的步履，脸上痛苦的表情，绷带和血迹———这一切，在暮色中，在灯光下构成了一幅画面，而这幅画面几乎是用语言无法形容的。
“我的祖国从7000英里的远方把我送到这里，不是让我开始比赛的，而是让我完成比赛的。”
就在这天的午后，阿赫瓦里和70多名参赛选手一起开始了奥运会马拉松的比赛，在这个行列里有曾经蝉联过奥运会马拉松金牌的埃塞俄比亚选手阿贝贝，还有后来获得本次比赛冠军的沃尔德，肯尼亚名将纳夫塔利。
比赛一开始，大家都跑得很正常，但到了11公里以后，超过2200米的海拔让许多运动员感到了高原的威力，本来就有伤的卫冕冠军阿贝贝第一个退出了比赛。
到了18公里的时候，一直在低海拔高度训练和比赛的阿赫瓦里也开始难受了：“我们所有的人都觉得头晕”，他后来回忆说：“那种条件导致人疲劳，他们开始晕倒。”阿赫瓦里感到肚子痛，而且一阵一阵地抽筋。缺氧导致他失去了方向感，除了要尽力向前跑以外，他还要尽力保持身体的平衡。就这样又跑了一公里多，他终于坚持不住摔倒了，右腿严重受伤。
他的教练赞比看到他受伤了，赶紧跑过去为他进行了紧急包扎，用绷带裹住了他的伤口，并且问他还能不能比赛，阿赫瓦里一边因为痛而皱着眉头，一边毫不犹豫地说：“可以。”在耽误了许多时间以后，他又开始跑了起来。
但是跑了没多久，赞比就看出来了，他的这个队员无法再进行比赛了。于是他开始说服阿赫瓦里放弃，到最后甚至开始强迫他。
但此时的阿赫瓦里却不这样想。他后来说：“我知道大家都已经结束比赛了，我知道我做得已经够好的了，我的教练也在对我说，放弃吧。但我却在心里对自己说，要继续！”
迈着艰难的步伐，一步一步地就像挪进体育场一样，阿赫瓦里感动了当时在场的所有人，工作人员、裁判，还有那些为数不多的观众。当他们明白了阿赫瓦里的状况时，全部都停下了手中的事，站在自己的位置上，一起为这位来自非洲的运动员鼓起掌来。而阿赫瓦里则一面继续慢慢地跑向终点，一面有礼貌地向所有给他鼓励的人回礼。
这一幕被当时的拍摄者誉为“奥林匹克史上最伟大的一幕”。
终于到达了终点，此时的终点门已经被拆掉了，但在体育场各个角落响起的掌声，变成了对阿赫瓦里最好的奖励。
刚刚通过终点，他就精疲力竭地倒在了地上。被送进医院以后，一直休养了两周的时间。在医院，他对媒体说：“我的祖国从7000英里的远方把我送到这里，不是让我开始比赛的，而是让我完成比赛的。”
这句话，在当时成为了媒体的热点，而在后来，则变成了激励成千上万人的信念。
